In the aftermath of the March 11 disaster, NHK World broadcasted in an emergency state. Each hour, NEWSLINE broadcasted for the first half-hour, followed by a half hour of silent video footage of the damage and spreading tsunami wave. During this footage, a title on the screen displayed NEXT NEWSLINE: hh:00 UTC, telling the next hour of broadcast.
It was during this emergency broadcast that NEWSLINE broke the story of the Fukushima I explosion, which was caught on-camera. Programming returned to normal after approximately one week.
